Wheel Throwing vs. Hand Building

What is Wheel Throwing?

Wheel throwing is the technique most people picture when they think of pottery, a spinning wheel, wet hands, and a lump of clay rising into a bowl or vase. The potter centres the clay on a rotating wheel head, then uses controlled pressure to pull walls upward into symmetrical forms.

It's rhythmic, fast-paced, and meditative. Once you find your flow, it feels almost like dancing with clay. Wheel throwing is ideal for creating functional ware — mugs, bowls, plates, and vases — where consistent shape and even walls matter.

Best for: Those who love symmetry, rhythm, and making functional pieces for everyday use.

What is Hand Building?

Hand building is pottery in its most ancient and expressive form — no wheel required. Using techniques such as pinching, coil building, and slab building, you shape clay entirely by hand using simple tools.

Hand building offers unlimited creative freedom. Uneven walls, organic textures, and sculptural shapes are not mistakes , they are the beauty of the process. It's the most accessible entry point into ceramics and requires no special equipment beyond clay and your hands.

Best for: Those who prefer a slower, more meditative pace, or want to create sculptural or decorative pieces with a personal, handcrafted feel.

Why Food-Grade Glazes Matter

What is a food-grade glaze?

A food-grade (or food-safe) glaze is a ceramic coating that has been formulated to be chemically stable, meaning it will not leach harmful substances into food or drink, even when exposed to acidic liquids like coffee, orange juice, or soup.

Glazes are essentially a thin layer of glass melted onto clay at high temperature. When correctly formulated and fired, this glass layer is smooth, waterproof, and safe for food contact. When poorly made or incorrectly fired, the glaze can crack, craze, or release metal oxides into whatever you eat or drink from it.

Why is food-grade glaze so important?

Not all glazes are created equal. Historically, many ceramic glazes contained lead and cadmium to achieve vibrant colours and glossy finishes. These heavy metals are highly toxic and can leach into food, posing serious health risks, especially for children.

Even today, poorly formulated glazes can leach harmful metals when in contact with:

  • ☕ Hot liquids (tea, coffee)
  • 🍋 Acidic foods (lemon, vinegar, tomato)
  • 🍽️ Everyday use over time

A food-grade glaze is tested and certified to release no harmful levels of lead, cadmium, or other metal oxides under normal use conditions.

Does Circular Flow use food-grade glazes?

Yes — always. At Circular Flow, we exclusively use food-grade glazes on all student work. This means every mug, bowl, or plate you create in our studio is safe to use at your dinner table, for your morning tea, or as a gift for someone you love.

We believe that beautiful pottery should also be safe pottery. You shouldn't have to choose between aesthetics and health and with the right materials, you never have to.
